The idea of forming an association for law students of ASEAN originated during an Indonesian law students conference, which was then realized by the first ASEAN Law Students' Conference in 1989, held in Jakarta.
1. In the conference, the ASEAN Law Students' Association was established.
2. In the 3rd ALSC held in Manila, it was decided that the Secretariat shall be stationed in Jakarta, subject to three-yearly review, hoping that the relation and co-operation with ASEAN can be intensified and enhanced.
3. In 1994, and confirmed in 1997, the ASEAN Standing Committee approved ALSA's request to become an ASEAN NGO.
Such membership provide ALSA with the following facilities and opportunities:
1. To submit written statements or recommendations and views of policy matters or on significant events or regional or international concern, to the ASEAN Standing Committee;
2. To submit its own project proposal s for third party funding to be channeled through the ASEAN Secretariat to the Standing Committee for approval;
3. To access to the ASEAN documents on a selective basis in consultation with the ASEAN Secretariat on a purpose of research;
4. To use the facilities of the ASEAN Secretariat for its official meetings and activities; and
5. To be invited to certain ASEAN Sub-Committee meetings.

ALSA is important for several reasons:
Firstly, it is a most convenient avenue through which law students of the region could find out about the different legal system, legal education system and culture among other ASEAN countries.
Secondly, as economy in the region expands, there is greater need for lawyers to establish contacts with other lawyers, businessmen, and officers from the neighboring countries and ALSA provides a good starting ground for law students to gain contacts at a students stage for their lives.
Thirdly, ALSA provides invaluable to how different people from different ASEAN member countries work. This is essentials which would certainly result in more occasions where local lawyers would have to work with other lawyers, businessmen and officers from the region.
